![]() The realism turns the action into much more than mere shooting. The difficulty curve is very steep-it’s a trek just making it up. It takes a lot of trial and error with multiple respawns to look at an enemy map and know exactly what you need to do. Not even during the second, third, or fourth game do you truly understand the basics of Rising Storm. There are a lot of controls to memorize and they don’t always transition over into actual game sessions at first. In the commander segment, for example, you are tutored in the very specific and painstaking art of driving a tank and controlling squad movement. It introduces you to the weapons and lets you practice with them by shooting at targets, making sure you get how they work and what their capabilities are. There is a basic tutorial level that walks you through the various roles you could play. ![]() As a World War II simulation, Rising Storm feels terrifyingly authentic.Īs a first person shooter this could work either for or against the player. Rather it immerses you in a real battle with what I can only assume are accurate weapons that you must utilize in specific tactical attacks that could mean the difference between life and death. It doesn’t bombard you with facts and dates (although they are there if you pay attention). There’s the Battle at Iwo Jima and the Battle of Saipan, just to name a few. The game attempts to recreate the Pacific campaign during 19 in battles between the Americans and the Japanese. If there ever was a game for military enthusiasts, this would be it.Įven without the prior knowledge, Rising Storm is an interesting history lesson. As in a real war, each person has specific skills, weapons and roles they must play in a variety of games and maps based on real-world battles. There are multiple player options on each side-32 to be exact-including snipers, rifle specialists, commanders and squad leaders. Each has its own weapons and abilities, although the basics and roles are relatively the same. ![]() Players choose between the Allies and the Axis, and even though Tripwire is based in Georgia (literally right down the street from Paste’s games editor, no less), neither side is drastically superior. Like Red Orchestra 2, Rising Storm takes place during World War II, although this time the action’s over in the Pacific. There are games that include optional realism modes for more daring and challenged players. ![]() Rising Storm-the multiplayer-only standalone expansion for 2011’s Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad-aims to create the most authentic military shooter out there, complete with dusty environments, interactive combat squads, and incredibly low defense for players. There are games that strive for realism, and then there are games that are just born with it. ![]()

![]() Capturing and holding resource points yields munitions, fuel and manpower that can be used to build your army and call in specific abilities like airstrikes or special infantry or armor. Unlike the campaign and objective-based scenarios on offer offline, base building and unit production do come into play in competitive multiplayer. While players will likely develop new strategies to exploit the various balance decisions in Company of Heroes 2, so far, little of it has to do with the cold.ĭespite the seemingly cosmetic nature of Company of Heroes 2's most conspicuous additions, there remains a deep, fun strategy game here that plays like little else. Yes, blizzards and frozen lakes and occlusion are present in Company of Heroes 2's multiplayer maps, but their ultimate impact on general play felt limited. But very little of that carries over to the competitive multiplayer that defines the game. There's a sense of novelty and iteration that helps to keep the single-player interesting enough to play through despite missions that often overstay their welcome. There are moments in Company of Heroes 2's campaign that make deliberate use of these mechanics, and the tease presented there is tantalizing, but as quickly as Company of Heroes 2 introduces major gameplay systems, they feel forgotten. These additions are impressive in how organic they feel - but they're disappointing in how little they matter. Ice can be destroyed by weapons fire, explosions and even the weight of heavier vehicles, which can be the only means of eliminating the more intimidating German tanks when other anti-vehicle options are in short supply. Frozen bodies of water also offer new tactical considerations. Infantry units are vulnerable to a slow death by exposure during blizzard conditions, which forces you to find areas of warmth, such as buildings or certain vehicles, or use engineers to build fires that your troops can huddle around for a temporary reprieve. The middle third of Company of Heroes 2's campaign is practically defined by that winter, which teases major gameplay implications. Environments are even more of a weapon and an enemy But this emphasis on environment is even more apparent in the icy potential death of the Russian winter. ![]() Units' lines of sight are now blocked realistically by objects that would occlude their view, allowing for games of cat and mouse between enemy armor and infantry, for example. It's made the environment even more of a weapon and an enemy. Relic has made the most additions to Company of Heroes 2 in this regard. You'll need to know what kind of pieces of each war-torn environment will serve to shield your forces, and destroying cover with armored infantry and ordinance is a viable, valuable tactic. More than most other strategy titles, Company of Heroes 2 depends on a geographic situational awareness. Anti-tank emplacements and machine gun squads have specific, limited fields of fire tanks and vehicles are often most vulnerable from the sides or rear.Ĭompany of Heroes 2 also continues, and even expands on, the importance of infantry and the cover system that can mean the difference between a successful attack or a failed one. ![]() Instead, positioning and micromanagement of unit abilities takes precedence. In the campaign, there isn't much focus on bases and unit production - in fact, many missions start you with most of the units you'll need to complete your often multi-tiered objectives. It's a real-time strategy title that follows a "less is more" ideology. Eventually, Company of Heroes 2 devolves into a forced march through mission after mission where it's difficult to find a greater motivation and investment in things beyond "win." And it doesn't help that Relic teases real innovation in the tactics and gameplay possibilities early on, only to draw them back with little fanfare.Īt a basic mechanical level, Company of Heroes 2 is very similar to the last game. This battlefield nihilism would be more effective, save that it never really stops. ![]() Relic places an often heavy hand on the wheel, depicting an army terrified of the enemy and its leaders. Thematically, the morality of Company of Heroes 2's engagements is murkier than that of most other strategy titles. Set on the Eastern Front of World War II, Company of Heroes 2 loosely relates the story of a commander turned reporter as he recounts his experiences fighting the German army - and surviving the Soviet commanders. ![]() ![]() ![]() Though the misuse of font may seem like a minor issue in regard to ADA compliance, it can result in negative consequences for a business. 3) What are the consequences of not using an ADA compliant font? However, if a business desires to add a logo containing a decorative font, this is acceptable. Under 703.2.3 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, all important text on signage (such as the name of the room being identified by the sign) must be sans serif with no italics or overly bold lettering. However, it’s important to highlight that the size of the font should be between 5/8 and 2 inches. To achieve compliance, a larger font is required on all ADA signage. Though the rules are fairly straightforward, it’s not uncommon to have lingering questions about ADA compliant fonts, which is why we’ve addressed a few FAQs below. Spacing between the baselines of separate lines of raised characters within a message shall be 135 percent minimum and 170 percent maximum of the raised character height. Characters shall be separated from raised borders and decorative elements 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) minimum. Where characters have other cross sections, spacing between individual raised characters shall be 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) minimum and 4 times the raised character stroke width maximum at the base of the cross sections, and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) minimum and 4 times the raised character stroke width maximum at the top of the cross sections. Where characters have rectangular cross sections, spacing between individual raised characters shall be 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) minimum and 4 times the raised character stroke width maximum. Character spacing shall be measured between the two closest points of adjacent raised characters within a message, excluding word spaces. Stroke thickness of the uppercase letter “I” shall be 15 percent maximum of the character’s height. Character height measured vertically from the baseline of the character shall be 5/8 inch (16 mm) minimum and 2 inches (51 mm) maximum based on the height of the uppercase letter “I.” Characters shall be selected from fonts where the width of the uppercase letter “O” is 55 percent minimum and 110 percent maximum of the height of the uppercase letter “I.” Characters shall not be italic, oblique, script, highly decorative, or of other unusual forms. Raised characters shall be installed in accordance with 703.4. Raised characters shall comply with 703.2 and shall be duplicated in braille complying with 703.3. Where both visual and tactile characters are required, either one sign with both visual and tactile characters or two separate signs-one with visual and one with tactile characters-shall be provided. In fact, the rules for ADA compliant fonts on signage are very strict, relating to character style, size, case, height, and more. In the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, the ADA outlines a number of criteria that must be met for compliance, including those pertaining to signage. General Rules for ADA Compliant Fonts for Signage With the information provided, sign fabricators and their clients can determine exactly what font case, style, and size is needed on signage to avoid running into noncompliance issues.
